Student housing in Dunkirk, Nottingham
Dunkirk sits tucked in between the University Park campus and Queen's Medical Centre, and for University of Nottingham students, it's hard to find a location that works better. The walk to lectures takes five minutes from some streets, and the tram stop at QMC connects you to the rest of the city in no time. It's a smaller area than Lenton but still has the essentials nearby, from corner shops and takeaways to Highfields Park when you need some green space.
Why Dunkirk works well for students
Student houses in Dunkirk tend to be quieter than those in Lenton, but that doesn't mean isolated. You're still surrounded by other students, and the campus is close enough that you end up bumping into people from your course regularly. When you're trying to manage a degree and everything that goes with it, being this close to where you need to be takes one thing off the list.
Over 60% of people living in Dunkirk are aged 16 to 24, which tells you most of what you need to know about the demographic. The streets nearest to University Boulevard and the QMC see the highest concentration of students, and you'll often find international students from the university living here too.
Being this close to campus also means you're next to some of the university's facilities without needing to cross half the city. Lakeside Arts is on your doorstep, Highfields Park runs along the western edge of the area, and the sports facilities at University Park are all within a few minutes' walk.
Student hotspots in Dunkirk
Dunkirk is residential first, so you won't find the same density of shops and pubs that Lenton has. But what you do find covers the basics, and anything else is a short bus ride into the centre.
Supermarkets and essentials
You're covered for day-to-day shopping without needing to travel:
- Convenience stores and off-licences are scattered throughout the area for smaller shops and top-ups during the week.
- Sainsbury's at Castle Marina Retail Park is a ten-minute walk and handles bigger shops when you need them.
- If you're heading to Beeston, there's a Tesco and a Sainsbury's along the high street, both easy to reach by bus.
Bars and pubs
Dunkirk itself doesn't have a huge number of pubs, but there are a couple worth knowing about:
- The Johnson Arms on Dunkirk Road is the main student pub in the area, known for showing sports and having a relaxed atmosphere most nights.
- For more choice, Lenton is a fifteen-minute walk north, and from there you have The Rose & Crown, The Three Wheatsheaves, and the rest of the Derby Road options.
Food spots
There's enough around Dunkirk to sort out food without going far. Pavilion Café at Lakeside Arts does coffee and light meals with a view over the lake in Highfields Park, and there are several curry houses and takeaways along University Boulevard. For sit-down meals, Beeston is close by and has more restaurants and cafés than Dunkirk itself.
